A football team has two jobs for the players, offense and defense. Offense job is to move the ball and score. The defense is to keep the opposing team from scoring by tackling opponents, intercepting the ball, causing a fumble, sacking the quarterback, preventing the opposing team from getting in scoring position. The defense like the offense has eleven players in position, defensive tackle, defensive end, linebacker, safety and cornerback.
 
The line of scrimmage is the spot on the filed were the ball is hiked. The defense lines up to stop the offense from moving pass that line. The defense functions are divided
 
Defensive Players:
 

DT= defensive tackle:

The inner two members of the defensive line, whose jobs are to maintain their position to stop a running play or to run through a gap in the offensive line to pressure the quarter back or disrupt the backfield formation.
 

LB = linebacker:

The players who line up behind the defensive linemen and generally are regarded as the team’s best tacklers. Depending on the formation, most teams employ either three or four linebackers per play. Linebackers have two roles defend the running and passing play.
 

DE= Defensive end:

The outer two members of the defensive line. Their job is to overcome offensive blocking and to meeting in the backfield, where they combine to tackle the opposing quarterback and any ball carrier. On running plays to the outside, they.re responsible for forcing the ball carrier either out of bounds or toward the pursuit of their other defensive team members.
 

CB= cornerback:

The player who line up on the wide parts of the field, generally opposite the offensive receivers.
 

S=Safety:

The players who line up the deepest in the secondary position- the last line of defense. Stop the play or recover from a major gain. There are free safeties and string safeties, and they must defend the deep pass and the run.
